The technology underpinning the success of Optics11 is based on two key elements: fiber-optical interferometry and state-of-the-art mechatronics

The beginning

2011

A promising technology based on fiber-top sensing lead to the start of Optics11 (hence the name :)). The company is founded as a university spin-off (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) by experimental physics professor Davide Iannuzzi and entrepreneur Hans Brouwer.

2012

Although the abovementioned technology was very promising, the problems this technology would solve for its potential users were still largely unknown.

The first step was to build a very basic version of a product that would demonstrate the added value of this fiber sensing technology, such that there was a low threshold for potential users to start working with it. Having the technology in the hands of users at the earliest stage turned out to be very important, and proved very valuable for our optical fiber sensing systems.

Based on the feedback of many users (now turned customers), Optics11 was able to develop multiple product lines in different application fields, that are truly able to solve problems where other technologies can not.

2016

In April 2016, Value Creation Capital invested in Optics11 through its TechNanoFund. The experienced entrepreneurs of the fund are supporting Optics11 in its growth and development by playing an active role in the Advisory Board, together with the founders.

Growth

2016

Growing incrementally on an increasing product portfolio and revenue, Optics11 has developed into a team of 18 young and enthousiastic employees. The team is led by CEO Niek Rijnveld, a mechatronics engineer by education, CTO Grzegorz Gruca, an electronics engineer who earned his PhD in experimental physics and BD Director Mark Jacobs, an aeronautical engineer by background. In addition, the founders of Optics11 are still very much involved on a strategic level. Currently, the Optics11  team consists of engineers of many disciplines, application specialists and sales engineers.

open US office

2018

Optics11 Life B.V. partnered with Red Box Direct to open up a sales office for the USA market. The new office is located in Boston.

As our Life Science and Industrial Sensing product lines aim for such a different industries and markets, we lauched a individual domain www.optics11life.com to provide more focus for our lifescience clients. All the Industrial Sensing activities remain accessible under www.optics11.com.

Technology

The technology of Optics11 is based on two key elements: fiber optic interferometry and state-of-the-art mechatronics. This combination allows the company to develop cutting-edge measurement systems which are highly competitive in all different kind of sensing fields.

Fiber-optic sensing technology

We believe that optical fiber sensing provides a unique solution for many applications that involve precise measurements in challenging environments. As light can travel unperturbed inside the fiber, and typically only glass or silicon is required for the sensing element, any environmental challenge can be championed: low or high temperature, liquids, electrical or magnetic fields, remote locations. There are many optical sensing techniques, but we believe that there is only one fiber sensing technology that provides the best sensitivity, highest bandwidth and highest dynamic range: interferometry. Interferometry means to directly measure the phase of light, which Optics11 is able to do with a precision that enters into the femto-domain. The design of the sensing element determines which physical parameter is translated into the precise optical phase: acoustics, accelerations, pressure, temperature, load, even gas concentrations is possible.

State-of-the-art mechatronics

To put these sensors to optimal use, Optics11 engineers state-of the art mechatronic solutions. This allows our sensors to operate in all kinds of harsh environments, while maintaining extreme sensitivity. Optics11 designs and realizes the sensing elements with a broad range of micromanufacturing technologies, such as photolithography, laser ablation or precision cutting.

Interrogation

The combination of optical fiber interferometry and micromanufactured sensing elements provide Optics11 with unique solutions for precise measurements in challenging environments. All instruments and systems developed by Optics11 are designed with the end user in mind, resulting in easy to use and purpose-driven instruments.
